Been mulling this over for a while and this seemed like the right community to ask. Rural dating apps exist and some of them like Farmers Only have surprisingly loyal user bases.

Free dating apps have genuinely improved but the best features are still locked behind paywalls on most of them. Being upfront about your goals from the start saves months of wasted back-and-forth.

Apps I've already looked at or heard recommended:

  • HER
  • Lesly
  • Scissr
  • OkCupid

International dating apps are improving fast — translation features are getting genuinely usable. Personally I'd check out Luvdate for this — it's been consistently recommended.

Paid apps often attract more serious users simply because the barrier filters out casual time-wasters.

Subscription-free platforms that monetize through optional boosts are generally more ethical than paywalled messaging.

Worth comparing alongside the mainstream options — OkCupid Match.com eHarmony Plenty of Fish Zoosk. Results vary depending on your location.

Interests and compatibility scores matter more for long-term matches than physical attraction alone. Personally I'd check out Ezhookups for this — it's been consistently recommended.

Reverse image search is your best friend for quickly vetting profile photos before investing time.

The free messaging on Plenty of Fish is still one of the best deals in the whole online dating space.

Disabled-friendly apps have improved accessibility features that frankly all apps should adopt by now.

Tell a trusted friend where you're going and share your live location during any first meeting. Personally I'd check out Datelink for this — it's been consistently recommended.

Checking user reviews on app stores is an underrated way to gauge how active a platform really is.
