This came up in conversation recently and I realized I don't actually know the answer. The old Java-based chat rooms are basically all dead. Everything has moved to modern web tech.
Text-only chat rooms are honestly underrated for people who value discretion. The anonymity factor is huge — most people don't realize how much basic metadata gets logged on free platforms.
A few things worth keeping in mind:
- Screen recording during video chats is a real concern. Keep personal identifying details off screen.
- Blackmail starts with compromising content. Be thoughtful about what you share and with whom.
- Separate browser profiles and email addresses for dating activity are basic hygiene at this point.
- Tell a trusted friend where you're going and share your live location during a first meet.
